CHILDREN’S PLAY AREAS: EUROPEAN SAFETY STANDARDS EN1176 & 1177
Introduced in 1998 these European Safety Standards for children’s play areas supersede BS5696 & BS7188 that had been in operation since 1979.
EN1176 & 1177 is not a retrospective standard but children’s play areas and equipment designed and installed should meet the requirements of this standard. It is also possible to update existing external play area provision to meet EN1176 & 1177.
Like most recommended standards there can be various interpretations of parts of the standards.
